Just How Easy Was Army Basic Training?

I was cleaning out some old paperwork the other day and I found this email I printed from a recruit in Basic Training.  He found my old website while he was on Christmas Exodus (if you go to Basic Training over Christmas, you get about two weeks to go home for the break).  After reviewing my website, he sent me the following email:

Surprisingly, SADplayer.com is still available!

The big thing that got me was when he said there were absolutely no smoking sessions.  When I was recruiting in 2005-2007, I could understand the need for “low stress” basic training, but in 2010?  Why aren’t soldiers being put under any stress?  He also said no discipline, so that doesn’t help the scenario at all.

Unfortunately, I had to inform the kid that he probably should go back or face jail time.  I also told him that hopefully his unit isn’t as bad as Basic Training.  Why should he even have had such a terrible experience in the first place?

I went to Basic Training in August of 2002.  The vast majority of recruits graduated.  I don’t know if it was easier when I went through because we had already been in Afghanistan for a year, but it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be.  The hardest part was dealing with some of the other recruits because they didn’t care a whole lot.

Can you spot me in this Basic Training scan?

Hopefully Basic Training has become tough again.
