I purchased the Zoom H1 a couple years ago for $99. It’s always worked for me, and its portability and lightweight are great. Of course you aren’t going to get superb audio out of it, but you’ll get something WAY better than your camera mics.
Here is a video from The Rose Fatale in which we utilized the Zoom H1. We used a Sony Lavalier microphone . Unfortunately, this was filmed in my garage before I sound proofed the garage, but you can get an idea of the quality you get, and it’s a huge improvement over the camera mic.
