Transcription of Where to Host an Online Video Course
Intro
Some things should be said or shouldn’t. Oh, it’s on with Juan and Sean.
Sean
Juan. Guess what?
Juan
What?
Sean
Decided I’m gonna start a video course.
Juan
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Are you saying….you want to become the teacher?
Sean
No, no, we’re gonna talk about that. Because I don’t want to be a teacher. But in this episode of Oh! It’s On!
Juan
With Juan
Sean
and Sean. And with that terrible segue. It’s true. I do. Okay, so really quick. We met in film school. So we’ve been through film school.
Juan
Oh, my god, yes,
Sean
I’ve made some little short films, I tried to do my own business thing, which I’m still kind of doing, I held back on it because I don’t have a good computer anymore. And I think that’s where I wish I would have spent more money on a computer. But anyway, so I want to start doing kind of like a video course. And I was wondering, because I know you, you like to do these online courses and stuff?
Juan
I really did. Because let me just like, sorry to cut you off. But the reason like, some of these, like online courses is one, it’s 100 times cheaper than going to
Sean
1000 times
Juan
then going to a fucking film school. And the reason why is because these just like these, like online training courses, is like, it’s just the meat and potatoes. You know, it’s like right there, what you need to do, instead of, Oh, hold on, I got to take math. Now. I got to take English, I got to take all these social classes or so whatever, you know, these other electives, instead of like, getting me to like, Hey, man, just get me to what I need to know. So I could do the work.
Sean
Yeah. And one thing I like about video courses, too, is like, if it’s during a part, if something that you might already know something about, or if it’s just not really interesting, you but you still kind of want to hear it. You can like, speed up the video, like you can make it 1.5 times faster or two times faster.
Juan
Oh, yeah.
Sean
I don’t like doing two times because like, I miss things, or I have to stop things a lot and rewind it. But I’ll usually go a good 1.5 but I couldn’t do that in school. I had to sit there and listen to regular speed rambling from the teachers
Juan
That and also read frickin random babbles from the students too.
Sean
Oh, don’t start on that one. But see, for me, that’s. So there’s three things that I could do here. I could go put my videos on somebody else’s platform, or I could host the platform or do it myself. And that’s what I thought I’d like to talk to you about today and get your thoughts on all of this. So the first thing as I was just saying is Udemy I think it’s pronounced Udemy now he cuz you call it something like that. I was like you say weird? Because I used to say Udemy
Juan
Oh, really?
Sean
Yeah.
Juan
Yeah, cuz he say cuz you I see you. So I got Udemy, you know, Udemy. I guess everybody pronounces like, differently.
Sean
I’ve heard it like four different ways. But my first thought was to go to them, because I bought some courses off of them. They’re good courses, the instructors on there are pretty decent. And that’s the one thing I kind of don’t want to do is, I don’t want to really be an instructor. I don’t think I have it in me to do this full time. And I feel like if you go with Udemy, you have to do it full time. Because your first course on there basically is just getting your foot in the door.
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
And then because they they take 50% of all the courses that are bought, if it’s organic to their website, but you do get four coupon codes that you can send out a month, where like if I sent a coupon like, if you signed up for one of my courses, or you somehow got on my udimi list, yes, I could send you a coupon for a new course. And if you join through that coupon, then I get to keep 90%, 97% of the money. Udemy only takes 3% but I from what I understand that would only be good if I was interested in producing new courses and doing all that and I don’t know if I want to produce new I mean. to me, I’m looking at this one video course as being like an all and cumbersome type. Of course. Yeah, I don’t. I don’t want to worry about multiple courses. I just want my one course where people can go and learn.
Juan
You know what I’ve seen also, like in Udemy, it’s like, because I’ve gotten some courses from there, too. But then I’ll get like an email saying, hey, there’s been updated to the course new videos on there. So that’s why you don’t really have to do like another separate set of courses. You know, you could always just keep updating.
Sean
Yeah, but then like, if they’re always going to be taking 50%, though, I think. And I, and that’s, but that the good thing about it is, is that they have, they’re known, you know, yes, people go to them, they have the traffic already. Yep. I would just have to create something that would make people want to buy. But I might, you’ve never looked at actually doing a course on Udemy. Have you?
Juan
No, I haven’t. But I have thought about like creating my own course.
Sean
On what being a man?
Juan
Exactly.
Sean
What would you call that?
Juan
That’s a good question. I never really thought of the title.
Sean
Ah, my first thought would be to go the Juan and only man
Juan
The Juan and only.
Sean
Man.
Juan
There you go.
Sean
The one and only but I feel like probably that’s been done. But so yeah, to my from when I looked on their website, it looked like any signups that I get or any purchases for my class. And it sucks though, too. Because, I mean, you could sell the class for $150. But then, you know, they have their super deals, and then that knocks it down to $20. And then if they take 50% of that, then you only get 10 bucks out of it.
Juan
10 bucks. Correct.
Sean
Yeah. So I mean, really, that first course is really, you know, I just thought, what if I just come off with some bs course? Like, not not, and then charge cheap for it? You know? Yeah. And then when I get all of my people onto that list, then I can use those coupon codes to actually send out for my real course. I wonder if that’s scamming Udemy?
Juan
Well, no, not really, because I see like, some bullshit course like that, too. It’s like I see when I was like, 13 ways how not to procrastinate. And it’s just some guy who sells it for like, 10 bucks. Yeah, and it’s just like, he just gives like 13 ideas of how not to procrastinate. That’s it. And they’re like, a minute long. So he just spent 13. Maybe he did the work, but to spend 30 minutes, you know, creating 13 little videos. Yeah, a minute each dirt on there.
Sean
You keep telling me I could do a course on how to make a GIF. Yeah. And I’m like, who in their blue mind is gonna buy that? Because when I first started doing that, I just searched on YouTube, how to make a GIF. Well, I kind of already knew how but I like to look, I like to research, you know? And I was like, anybody could do that. But if I just make it make it easy for somebody to do, and they charge $10.
Juan
But see, you already have the honey say you already did the work. You already have the proof. Because now you have these gifts are being what downloaded like 1000s of times.
Sean
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they just got the one of angel saying to in the pink one in the stink. That’s just reached 1000. Dude, you have so many downloads. I don’t think I put into the BANJJ chat, but the one the one where you’re like, I’m so effing motivated right now. And then you kick the words and they twirl away. That one just got to 2000 shares.
Juan
See? There you go. You could show people.
Sean
Yeah, yeah. And, and I guess Lexi did Angel message her. Or she messaged Angel and said, Hey, did you know this GIF is out there? And then she put the one like, I’m going to find you and I’m going to kill you. Yeah, I guess I could. I mean, that could be my entry level. And then I come out. And I come out with this dinky little course. And then Oh, hey, look at this course. This is eight hours of instruction. Like what the heck? Where did this come from?
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
But I know a lot of courses on there. They, the ones that I have seen. Do you have a lot of fluff in them? Mm hmm. It’s just so they could say they have eight hours, but I don’t think I would have an actual like, if I go eight hours, it would be eight hours. Like you learn something like every other sentence, you know?
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
I think that’s, that’s, I think that’s what people would want. But what do I know? So yeah, that’s, uh, that’s the part of Udemy and then there’s Skillshare, which is like Udemy. They pay like, basically you upload your course to them. And then people pay a subscription, and they can view all the courses on there. And then, depending on how many how much your videos are watched, that’s how much your check is like, you get a percentage of the total videos watched.
Juan
But I got a question. So can you put both of these training videos in both of these sites? Or does like, or do they have like, do they have one of those, like,
Sean
exclusive?
No, like those? Uh, yeah, like, no share clauses stuff like that.
And yeah, like a non competitor?
Juan
Yeah, like, exactly.
Sean
I never thought about that. You just blew my mind.
Juan
You know, because, like, let’s just say if I’m going to do okay, let’s say I was going to do like, a social media marketing for a pizza restaurant here in Vegas.
Sean
Yeah.
Juan
That’s like, I would give them like a, like a political, you know, like a, like a claw saying, you know what, it’s like, I’m gonna be working with you know, other pizza company. You know, that’s gonna be your competition. I’m gonna be happening with their social media marketing
Sean
Yeah, that’s, I never thought about that. Dang, I have to look into that.
Juan
Because yeah, cuz if you don’t have that, it’s like, bam. There’s two sites now where you could put your work in? Yeah, I mean, I got to do yeah, cuz all you got to do is just do the work once. And then all that it’s just passive income.
Sean
Yeah. Yeah.
Juan
It’s one of those like you said it, forget it. I know. You’re not going to get the full amount. But you know, it’s something coming in.
Sean
Yeah. And that’s kind of just after this whole pandemic and all the lockdowns, everything I need. I was like I need I really need something that I can have on the side, I want to have a couple. So at least I don’t, I’d love to have at least three sources of income. But this one, like he said, If I could have it on Skillshare and Udemy. I’m gonna look into that and write that down really quick. But then there’s the third one. That’s a to do it myself.
Juan
Uh huh.
Sean
And that way, I get to keep all of the profits, which sounds really nice. But the downside is that I have to go find the traffic. And that’s the that’s maybe 10 years ago when ads weren’t as easy as they are now.
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
But there’s a lot of ad mark. There’s a lot of ad buying out there now.
Juan
Mm hmm. And on top of that, it’s like how much does it cost you to host it?
Sean
Oh, the hosting is only 150 bucks. One time.
Juan
One time fee?
Sean
Yeah. So that’s not that bad. I yeah. And then I could i don’t know if i think that includes a domain. But I think the domain’s only good for a year, you got to buy that again. But um, yeah, for 150 bucks, you can get up to 500 students. And then dependent if you need more students, you can buy in packages of 250 at two cents a piece. So it’s like five bucks or whatever. Or 10 bucks.
Juan
No kidding.
Sean
It’s cheap. It’s, it’s a company called, Well, the one I looked at was called Voomly. I bought a couple other pieces of their software. And I liked their software. It’s it’s not the best. Yeah, but but it works in conjunction with something else. But this looks more of like a good one, one and done type thing. But like I said, I know, you. You’ve you always tried to talk me into starting this gift course. So I figure you’d have some more better insight, which you’ve already given me plenty of insight. But do you have anything else to say?
Juan
Oh, man, wow. Just like right off the top my head like ugh! It’s something after like, sit down, start writing it down. Okay.
Sean
Well, it won’t be like, I still have to, like, I still gotta outline the course. Yeah. And I still got to do like all of that. So
Juan
But I mean, but you could always just like, what some people aren’t doing is like, create its own, like social media pages for it. Like its own little Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.
Sean
Oh, yeah. People aren’t doing that. I figured that’d be something that was just normal.
Juan
Well, a lot of you are doing it. It’s, I mean, a lot of people do do it. But it’s just like, just there. Oh, it’s not really, they’re not really throwing it out there. It’s just like sitting there.
Sean
They’re not like, up keeping it.
Juan
That or they’re not promoting it.
Sean
You mean like, Oh, it’s on pod, Facebook and Twitter. That’s all gonna change cuz now. Things are finally getting settled again. Uh huh. But, but yeah. Oh, yeah. So I think it’s doable. Have you heard of this piece of software. This is for anybody who wants to create a course. For me. I haven’t really looked but I couldn’t find a good screen capture thing to, you know, like people like zoom in on videos. Yeah, as their screen capturing and they highlight things and do all that I was I couldn’t find a piece of software that could do all that.
Juan
I use Camtasia that’s a software that I use. Because it’s, it’s great. It’s a screen recorder. It also lets you edit videos in it too. And, uh, what do you call it? It also lets you like zoom in, and lets you like focus on a certain area, and zoom back out. Okay, so that’s Camtasia.
Sean
I’ve heard of Camtasia. I didn’t know you could screen record with it. I thought it was a video editing software thing.
Juan
No, that’s what is. That’s what its its main purpose. It was just for just what do you call it? Screen recording.
Sean
Oh, shows how much I know. Now, I did find something though. Just like two days ago. Have you heard of this? It’s called Glassbrick.
Juan
No, I haven’t.
Sean
It’s it’s based. It’s not it doesn’t screen capture. But it it was made for people who can’t like read or see well. And basically, it’s you just hold CTRL and you zoom in with your mouse wheel. And it goes right to where your mouse is. and it follows your mouse.
Juan
Oh, wow.
Sean
And it’s super easy. Like, I was playing with it. And I was just like, I thought if you’re talking about something and reading something and doing stuff, I was like this might be a little hard. But that means it’s so easy. And then I’m just going to use OBS to screen capture. And then, um, but yeah, like I was this there is a program out there called Glassbrick. It’s been around for like eight years. And it’s it doesn’t have a lot of attention. But I mean for I don’t know, I really like I just don’t know if it’s the first one that I found. And I used it and I like it because it’s the first one. Yeah, tried. But it’s super easy, and it does exactly what I want it to do. So that’s for anybody who wants to go and create their own course. Like, I have that video on my Sean Corcoran Video YouTube channel. I haven’t. I didn’t know I didn’t have notifications turned off for that. And I just went and checked it. I made a video on how to sync two different hertz like, you got your 44.1 hertz and your 48 hertz sound recordings files. And I couldn’t find a video showing a quick and easy way to sync those two different audio files. Yeah. And I found like three videos that kind of told how in different parts and I basically just made a video that combined them. And I went and I just like logged into the YouTube channel and that video has like 9500 views or something. Oh, wow. I was like what the heck? And it’s I have a video. Did you see that? When the remote video I made the comparing the two remotes. Yeah, that one has like 9000 views. Yeah, I’m just like people like to learn on YouTube. And I think that that’s, that’s like that’s at the point like how many videos of my course do I release on YouTube so that they go and buy it you know?
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
But yeah, I just wanted to see what you thought about which which course I which, which way I should go I’m really interested in the doing both Skillshare and Udemy.
Juan
If you can find out if they don’t have the frickin competitor clause or whatever and stuff. I said drop them on both. Yeah,
Sean
That’s probably the way to go. Skill shares use you log in and says become a teacher right? Click that button and goes our top teachers make over 100 grand a month. And it’s like okay, how many of those are doing that? And how long have they been doing it? Like am I gonna just jump in in the first month be making two grand Hey, our podcast made six cents. Yeah, that’s, I mean, dude, I don’t want to brag I don’t want I mean I put the anchor ad at the beginning of all the episodes but I think for now I’m going to take them off until we start to get because we’re nobodies right now. You know? Like our podcast doesn’t have any following and if the first thing people hear is an ad I feel like that might turn them off. Because they’re gonna give the new podcast a listen. And then they got to sit through an ad in the beginning. Which we probably should be doing mid rolls I think just just for now but then when we get when we get did you did or did I give you the login for the podcast on Anchor?
Juan
No, not yet now. Oh,
Sean
yeah, dude, you can. So you go so we could like this is this is kind of related to core stuff because they say podcasts….you should do a podcast for anything you do. So if you’re interested in doing the podcast, and this sounds like an anchor ad, but they’re not paying me for this one, like you put you record your sponsorship. So like if you go into the account, you can, you can record you can make your own 30 second advertisement for anchor. And they pay $15 per 1000 listens. So you can and then you can switch him out. Like, you don’t have to put it like once you put the podcast out there with the ad, it doesn’t stay that way you can change out with if somebody else comes along. Let’s say, Tai Lopez comes and goes hey, Juan and Sean, I like your podcast, I’ll pay you $50 per 1000. So we can pull out the anchor ad and put in the tai lopez ad.
Juan
And we can still does that. You know what excites me more? This bookshelf.
Sean
I would be like Tai Lopez, you know what excites me more? My boner.
But uh, but Yeah, dude, it’s, it’s pretty fun. I mean, Anchor makes it so easy. Easy. They didn’t get us on Apple. Like they said they would. But Apple may have listened to a few things we said and said nope.
Juan
What? Are they supposed to be like a little kid friendly?
Sean
Yeah. Yeah. But we can always apply ourselves. And then if they accept it, then we just put our link into the anchor link. And that way people can see it that way too.
Juan
Sounds good.
Sean
Yeah. But yeah, dude, it’s, it’s it to me. It’s just so easy. Like now I don’t have to now. So what a lot of people do is on YouTube. They make clips of their podcast and put the clips on YouTube. So people can like listen to the clips on YouTube and then go somewhere else to hear the full podcast.
Juan
Yeah, like what Joe Rogan does? And Ben Shapiro.
Sean
Yeah. And then if we get really fancy we can. We can record video while we do this.
Juan
Oh, that’d be great.
Sean
I don’t know. I don’t want people to see my belly right now.
Juan
But that’s okay. Because you can always change!
Sean
Film from the neck up. But yeah, no, it’s I I’m afraid that I’m going to, like dive too hard into this video course. But you know, it’s one of those things. I don’t want to make the wrong decision. Like I should have done it on my own. But if I can do it on Skillshare and Udemy. That’s the definite way I’m gonna go.
Juan
Mm hmm. And then once you get known, create your own course, and sell it off. Yeah. Skillshare.
Sean
Now that’s, that’s phase three. Yeah, it can be phase two. Now phase one is making it. And then phase two is picking a platform.
Juan
Okay.
Sean
And then phase three is putting it on your own platform.
Juan
Yeah. Because you want to do start collecting your email.
Sean
Yep. Now, that’s the that’s what I’ve been doing lately, too, is sending emails out for this warehouse I’m working in.
Juan
Oh, nice.
Sean
Do you know Klaviyo
Juan
No. I know MailChimp.
Sean
Now Klaviyo is like a full service like, customer resource system, or CRM is what it’s called. But like, okay, you can build you can get your emails in there. And then
Juan
Yeah.
Sean
You make the emails in there. And yeah, that should be fun. there anything else you want to let the world know about video courses Juan.
Juan
Get ready to watch Shawn’s video course.
Sean
Yeah, for only $1,995 reduced down to $49.95. Today, only. Every time I get an email that’s like that. I’m like, oh my gosh. Like why? Just like, you really? I’ve thought I’ve wanted to make my course worth like $8 million. But today $39.95
Juan
And we’ll show you what a real studio is supposed to look like.
Sean
Yeah, with my my padding that I got out of package the peanuts are pasted up on a piece of cardboard and hanging on the wall right now. It’s called Poor Man’s film school. That’s your thing. You’re supposed to do that.
Juan
Oh, Poor Man’s Film School. Yep.
Sean
Well, did you want to talk about the people copying other people
Juan
Oh man, yeah, cuz I was saying it’s like, cuz a shot was telling me is like, well you know, it’s the niche I’m gonna go I’m gonna throw it out there because people my copyright get thumbs like, Sean, you don’t know how many videos I’ve seen on how to be a successful video wedding producer.
Sean
Yeah
Juan
And the first video that I saw, I was like, okay, you know, they got some, some, you know, they give you some good nuggets, you know stuff for, you know how to do it how to do from A to B, A to Z, like on a wedding video production. And then I see someone else has a different course. But it’s the same thing, but just worded differently. Then I saw the third quote, because I like these suckers. I was like, wait, I made before I pay for a bootleg first. And then I saw the same training. It’s like all three of them had like the same train from beginning to end. But it was just the modules were all worded differently. Oh, man, that was like, “Damn.” Well, it’s like the same thing. Like any story. I mean, you put a movie up there. It’s like, what’s it about the hero’s journey?
Sean
Yeah.
Juan
I was like, okay, that’s what it is. It’s just different.
Sean
Ah, well, I will try to make it different. I think I think if I put my own goofiness in it, I don’t know if that would turn people away, or if people would like that. And I mean, I can be professional, but be different.
You know, not just I’m not just some guy telling you what to do.
Juan
Oh, but you got to make sure. Okay, if you can do it that way. Just make sure it doesn’t make it look like you’re an idiot. Like, for example, it’s like, what am I instructors talking about? Like, when you’re writing scripts, when you’re doing scripts, it’s like, she had one person, she was a script reader for one of these, like, top agencies, and it’s one person always kept sending her scripts, but with the front cover was upside down to make her look to stand to make her stand out differently. And she would talk about how all these people would send like their scripts. And he would, you know, be like fancy new cameras, all this. And the reason she brought this person script, she brought this one, specifically because she always sent this she sent her scripts, but what the main cover upside down just to look different, but to her. It’s like, what if you do stuff like that? It makes it seem like you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. It’s like a doctor. It’s like a doctor. You know? Okay, they’re checking my heart. But he’s like, Well, you know what, it might just take a little shot to fix that heart. And it’s like, okay, now you sound stupid.
Sean
Well, yeah.
Juan
Yeah. So it’s like, stuff like that. It’s like, yeah, it’s like, you can put your own little twist to it. But just like, Don’t make it too goofy to the point where it seems like, this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Yeah.
Sean
Yeah, that’s definitely true. Yeah, and I’ve, I mean, there’s like, I’ve bought some video courses on Udemy. Because it’s, I’m thinking about it now. And they are pretty similar. And I think that, I mean, like, how am I going to stand out? That’s just the thing. That’s what I one guy, I saw that. I read some of the stuff he wrote about doing your own course. And he said, You have to try to do something to stand out. And it’s just like, well, how hard do I try to stand out? Because ultimately, I probably will have a lot of the same information as somebody else. But am I going to present it better, I guess, or differently. But do you have anything else to add Juan?
Juan
Oh, that’s about it for me.
Sean
Well, then, if you have a video course, and you would like to show us the video course. So Juan doesn’t have to bootleg it, you can tweet us or shoot us a message on Facebook @OIOpod or send us an email at ohitsonpod@gmail.com. Last words Juan. I think already asked that. Sorry.
Juan
Remember, piracy is wrong.
Sean
But bootlegging isn’t?
Juan
If you can steal the booty, you’re good to go.
Sean
And always remember, the microphone might be on.
