On Saturday, April 11th, 2020, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds flew over 18 hospitals in Las Vegas. Eight Air Force F-16’s flew over the hospitals over the span of 25 minutes.
Why? To show appreciation for health care workers because the money spent on an air show is more important than PPE.
Unlike Chicken Hawks, I can’t see military shows of power without seeing how much money is being spent.
Military and “Its” Money
(“Its” is in quotes because government money isn’t earned or given)
According to Tom Woods‘ “The Pentagon Vs. the Economy,” an F-16 fighter jet, a jet that has been in service for over 4 decades, uses more fuel than a normal car uses over the period of two years.
Of the videos I’ve seen, I’ve only seen 6 jets doing the flyover, so I’ll even just calculate six jets.
Let’s do some quick math.
6 jets · 25 minutes = 150 minutes. That’s two and a half hours.
In that 25 minutes, that’s 5 years of gasoline a single car could have used.
Five years! What if all that gas was distributed between Vegas health care workers instead? Sure, it might end up being a whole lot between all of them, but it’s better than nothing, and nothing would’ve been wasted.

I first heard about this story on Las Vegas’s 8 News Now’s Alexa flash briefing and that led me to the following sites:

This incident I actually first read about in Chalmers Johnson’s book Blowback.
