The Conjuring 3: The Dumb Devil Made Me Do It!

Sequels can get annoying. There’s so much to remember from the previous films, and it doesn’t help if they are years and years apart! The first Conjuring came out in 2013. That’s not really that long ago considering how many movies have spawned from it. Horror – gotta love how they can pump movies in that genre!

So take a sit back and listen to me rant about The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It!

What if anyone could use that defense in court?!?

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It Transcript

Could you imagine going into a courtroom because one day you’re walking by the courthouse and you’re just bored? And you walk into the courtroom thinking, “Oh, I’m just gonna watch this, these proceedings happen in this court case,”

And the prosecutor gets up and goes, “Your Honor. Do you really expect us to take the case in which they say, the devil made me do it?” Well, I don’t know if that’s how it never normally works. But that was a question that was brought up in this movie, and I think The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It handled it pretty entertainingly.

Now, of course, this movie is based on a true story. And what I like about this movie, and all these Conjuring movies is they’re actually based on a couple that are still alive that go out and try to do these exorcisms and investigate all this paranormal activity. They even play clips and a couple of them I know this one conjuring three they do they play clips from actual, actual exorcism that Lorraine and Ed tried to do and it just add – you know, obviously, the movie takes a lot of artistic liberties. This is entertainment. This is not a documentary, which a lot of people still if you go online and look, “It’s not real. It didn’t follow it close enough.” Like, of course, it didn’t follow it close enough. It’s not a documentary.

The purpose of this is to entertain you. They just happen to use real life stuff that happened and a lot of people do that in a lot of people keep getting upset that it didn’t follow it closely enough. Well, guess what? When you have about $50 million invested into something, you’re gonna want it to make money. I mean, I’ve never had $50 million. I’ve never had to – I’ve never had $1 million. But if I were to put a million dollars of my money in something, and I’m thinking to myself, this ain’t gonna make money this way. I’m gonna say you’re gonna have to change something, which hopefully the colab – you know, the director, the producer, and everybody can work together to hopefully not cloud the director’s vision too much.

Remember, people. These are not documentaries, these are movies for entertainment. Okay? Unless you think this father that’s in the movie, the priest. The kid in the movie is he is, he is being exercised, he needs to be exercised, I should say really badly because his possession is Whoo. He is possessed, and the priest, he sees it the kids going nuts. And he goes, “We need to get him to the church.” Like I did – Okay. I’ve never been part of an exorcism. Maybe this priest has done a ton.

This, this kids get like done, because his body is contorting. And that’s another thing I have to bring up. It seems like in all of these movies, these people get their bodies possessed by evil spirits. And then they’re able to, they’re fully like healed at the end of it. They’re like, there’s no pain. There’s no like the kid he his whole body. I mean, he got he could be a flexible kid, I guess. But you’re really pushing it with some of the things that he did here. But once the demon leaves the body is like the whole body just completely heal itself. I don’t think that’s ever been explained. Maybe it has and I just have missed it.

That opening shot or it’s not the opening shot, you get an opening shot of the house, which is nice. And then it goes back out there and the priest is getting there. And you know what that looks like? It looks just like Poltergeist just look at the movie cover or movie poster of Poltergeist.

OOoo, and if you listen to my last episode with Fast and Furious 9p Spirit oUntamed, I didn’t have any favorite quotes, because I wasn’t able to write them down. But this movie, I think there were a couple. Listen to this one

“Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared.” That’s true.

But if there was a quote that I think that “We have to be careful of it was we must be careful of how our obsessions are passed to our children.” And, you know, that’s probably one of the most important things that one can take away from this movie from this demonic evil movie is, it’s like in In the Heights, just a couple episodes ago, should the parents be forcing their kids their beliefs, their dreams onto the kids? Who knows some kids maybe need the direction, but some kids maybe don’t. So just keep that in mind when you’re parenting.

So one thing I didn’t understand, and like I’ve seen most of the Conjuring universe movies. And maybe it’s just I had something I’m completely missing out on. But Arnie, obviously has the devil put into him from the kid, because he invites the devil into his body. But for some reason, he doesn’t remember that. And just very thankfully, everybody else just happened to be knocked out, except Ed. But Ed had that heart attack. And he eventually comes to and lets everybody know that the devil is inside Arnie just right as the devil happens to start doing things. So there’s good timing.

Now. So Ernie and his girlfriend are living in the upstairs apartment of this kennel manager guy in from the outside of his house, it does not look like a kennel at all, and you get inside. And really, it doesn’t even look like a kennel inside. And it looks. I mean, it’s a small town. So things aren’t usually as kept up, or pretty as they are in bigger towns. But would you leave your dog in this place? Cuz I don’t think I would, especially since the manager, well, he hired the good looking girl. So maybe that’s why but he, he looks like a scumbag.

Oh, and then there was of course, this you gotta see how much love that Lorraine and Ed show for each other. And while Ed is in his hospital bed just passed out, People are telling Lorainne “You need to go home and get some rest.”

And she said, “I am at home.” Because Ed is her home. Aw. But then it was weird. It took me a, well not that she loved him or anything. It was the way that she was shot. And the fact that there was a fade out after she said that line. And then it came to somewhere else. And it just, it felt like I mean, that was the only edit in the movie that really stood out to me as bad. And I just, I didn’t follow it. I didn’t understand. It felt like it felt like it was film school short film. I was pretty upset about that. And I’m hoping they didn’t do the fade out so that you could hear people crying in the movie theater, because it wasn’t really that emotional of a scene, or at least I guess maybe it’s just me, me and my fat black heart.

And have you ever wondered, there’s always like one priests at these exorcisms? I mean, I get it, they don’t have tons of numbers. But if you have like Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are very well known about what they do, and they’re like, oh, there’s something here! I mean, wouldn’t you want to send a couple? Maybe? I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. That’s just something that’s always bothered me in these movies. I know some movies, they send a couple, but most of the time, they’re like, lone, spiritual warriors.

One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when the lawyer is talking, I think to the Warrens about Arnie in his little defense, he’s gonna have to build up. And I mean, the one line, like I said, at the beginning of this, that I thought was really good was when Ed said, “The court accepts God, why can’t or it’s about time they start accepting the devil, or something like that, or the existence of the devil.”

And I was like, dang, that’s true. And then to me that was an argument enough to allow the case to happen. But I guess in real life, the case got thrown out on the “the devil made me do it” charge which I mean, I get because if one guy says it, and he’s able to convince the jury that the devil made him do it, then how many other murderers are going to come out are bad people just go “Oh the devil made me do it!” and then fabricate a case on that line, but that’d be tough.

But you know, one of my favorite scenes is when they’re talking to the lawyer and she’s like, “This is blasphemy! This ain’t ever gonna work!” And then it’s like, we’ll come over to our house. And then you don’t see her at their house, it just cuts to a courtroom and she looks, she looks ill, cuz she just saw the evil.

We come to realize that some of this bad stuff is happening through these little witch Totem things. They’re little cursed skulls. And there’s something under they don’t know it yet, but there’s something under the house that they think caused the little boy to get possessed. Lorraine goes under the house because Ed obviously can’t follow her, but Lorraine’s under there. And she has what appears to be no, no weaponry. And I know she’s, she can say she has psychic abilities and stuff. But if you’re in this line of work, aren’t you at least carrying garlic, or holy water or something or a stake? Like, like anything, except nothing. that bothered me a little bit.

There was one scene where they finally found they found a guy, the father, who was frayed out of his pants, at the beginning of the movie suggested that they go talk to this other priest that had something that possibly has answers for this due to what they found under the house. They go talk to this guy and this guy, he’s creepy. First off, but he, he has all these books. And it’s Hollywood. And you know, they’re anti gun, except in their gun movies that make them a lot of money.

But a lot of them, you know, aren’t the happiest people about guns. And I feel like the lines in this movie where they’re talking about taking this stuff off the streets. It’s kind of a hint, it sounds just like, like, you could easily replay these books with guns. I get what they’re saying. You can’t uninvent guns just like you can’t uninvent these vessels. And I like that. I like that about this. You know, that is to me, I feel like their house should be a little more protected from evil but are from evil people.

They just leave their house and they maybe that that kids their their little understudy, I guess you’d call him. That’s where that’s me being thinking too hard right now.

So, and then there was the other scene where the Boston cop or Danvers cop pulled out three knives, and then asked Lorainne “Which one of these knives killed somebody?” and, Ed course gets upset about it. But it’s like you’re not – she has a one in three chance. Like, if you play roulette, you can bet on the one through 12 or something like that, you can bet on the thirds. And I mean, I’ve done it and you hit it quite a bit. I mean, about 30, you have about a 30 to 33% chance.

Then he admits he admits just in the next scene. Oh, yeah, it was one in three chairs. What the heck. So he takes them out to this place where this girl supposedly is, has been killed or kidnapped or something and he or she was and, and then Lorainne like, enters the spirit. She’s replaying everything. And then she gets the edge of a cliff and then some demon hands pulls her down. And Ed, Mister, “I Just Had a Heart Attack Like Two Days Ago,” runs and jumps in saves her.

I mean, this man just had a heart attack. And he now he’s pulling his wife up from falling over the cliff. That’s love. Just like Lorraine was saying. That was his house he was seeing fall over the edge. Did he really want his house to go away? No, no. But he should have sold the fact that he just had a heart attack a little bit more. And then they go to the morgue to check out the body. And there’s no security at all in this more. I don’t know. I mean, Oh, geez. Now I can’t remember which mortgage they’re in. But if it’s a small town morgue, which did that looks like a pretty busy more for a small town. But you would think that there would have been some sort of security there.

So we get near the end of the movie and we get to Arnie’s little trial and I thought it was kind of weird. He gets out of the back of the paddy wagon and he’s being escorted in and then about 10 seconds later his girlfriend runs up to him and give him a kiss. And I’m thinking why wasn’t she there right away? Where does she just go, “Oh, my my boyfriend might be going to jail. I should go check him out!” I that was kind of weird to me.

But the conjuring three definitely was worth seeing in the theaters. I love a good long horror movie. Unfortunately, horror movies a lot of the time are pretty short, but when they’re given more than 90 minutes, I’m excited for them. But this movie overall didn’t They make me scratch my head too much, or make me frustrated. I think if you get to the end the movie, and then they go ahead and play the actual recording and show some of the actual pictures of Ed and Lorraine Warren. And it adds that sense of reality to the movie. And it’s like, well, how much of this was real? Y’know? At least the movie had an ending. So you can’t hate the movie for that, like I do for most movies like Escape Room has another movie coming out a sequel to the worst movie of 2019 or whichever 2020 whatever year it came out.

And I was so mad at that movie, because it had no ending. It just said, “Hey, look, there’s this whole other movie that possibly could be made.” And that’s super ignorant or super ego maniacal or something. But anyways, thanks for listening to this episode of Movies Are Dumb Sometimes on The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. I hope they make more of these movies. We don’t know what there’s so much that I mean, there’s so much in these movies that they could do so let’s see if they do them.

And just remember, and I don’t think I’m just gonna start saying this at the end of every podcast because it doesn’t seem like anybody understands. When you’re in the movie theater, just keep your mouth shut. Not hard. Just don’t talk.

If you have to talk, let everybody know before the movie starts. Just stand outside by the ticket taker or stand by the where you buy tickets at by the box office or just stand by concessions or just stand by the door of the theater screen that you’re going to be watching and just “Hey, everybody, I’m going to talk and during the movie,” you at least be that courteous if you’re just going to ruin the whole mood of the movie for everybody. So be quiet!
