In short, I actually liked this movie, but sometimes, Movies Are Dumb Sometimes, as you’ll see in my Black and Blue Review!
Performances were good, stories were good, editing and cinematography were good. Overall good film, but Movies Are Dumb Sometimes, and you can see me rant why!
What did you think of Black and Blue?
Transcription of Black and Blue Review
So when I went and saw a Black and Blue I was thinking to myself, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be preached to about race,” but thankfully, that didn’t quite happen.
So there are just a few main points I would like to talk about with Black and Blue today. It was a good movie. I expected, like I said earlier, this to be such a race movie, but one thing that I really enjoyed about it is the female main character, who was black.
I mean it starts off where I’m like okay. Where she’s jogging down the street in black clothes in a black hoodie with her hood open over her head and she’s jogging along. And then she gets pulled over because the police say there’s a suspect that looks like her. Because she’s like a cop and the cops are the two male white cops are all like “You know how it is,” and I’m like part of me it’s like “Well, why are you jogging around dressed in all black with your hood up?”
I mean I’m not saying like that’s bad, but that’s what somebody would do if they just robbed somebody or they just did something wrong, you know, they’re trying to hide.
So, you know, it started off where I was like, “Oh my gosh!” but then it got better after that. It became a more of a story about how we need to look at each other as individuals and not as groups. I really believe that like it’s really great to hear that coming from a movie that because well it’s really good because most people think movies are documentaries nowadays and it’s just nice to maybe that people will hear that and maybe not just assume that because of this they’re people in this area of town that every single person there is there because they want to be there and they want to be a certain way.
I mean she says that in the movie at seventeen, that she enlisted into the army and I felt like they downplayed all this it was kind of weird.
She did this whole like so there’s one point where she’s shot and she’s bleeding out or not bleeding out. She’s bleeding it’s she got a flesh wound and she’s fixing herself up and her friend, Mouse, is like “Whoa, where’d you learn to do that?”
She’s repairing her cut. She’s like “Afghanistan.”
Like there’s this one time with this guy when I got called back into the Army, I had to fly into Georgia and then take a shuttle bus to Fort Benning, Georgia. There were like three of us in the vehicle and I had been recalled and it was three of us who were recalled who were getting called back in to go back to the Middle East and then there were new brand new recruits in there and we were in there just talking trash about the army. We are we were just…Oh my gosh…especially for these brand-new kids coming and we probably shouldn’t have been doing it, but then at one point, we’re sitting like in the back and we asked this kid in front of us, “So, what’s your MOS?”
And this kid goes, “EIGHTEEN X-RAY!” It was so funny he was like he was super proud of something he hasn’t even experienced yet.
So it was just like we don’t know what she did. She probably was military police that’s my best guess. I don’t think they said in the film what she did but for her to be in combat and to be a police officer. A lot of people get out and they go into law enforcement.
But I just felt like they could have played on that military backstory a little bit more than just always just kind of like it’s it was like not it seemed like it wasn’t a big deal.
I guess to me but this is Movies Are Dumb Sometimes so we’re gonna talk about the dumbest moment, in this movie!
There’s a part near the beginning of the movie where she’s walking in somewhere where she’s not supposed to be walking up into there up in this old warehouse. It’s old. Iit’s been abandoned. It’s trashed and they’re up on the second floor of this warehouse.
It’s wide open. It’s a little dark in there. It’s there’s really a lot of cloud cover but wide open enough light in there to see all the way through everything.
She’s walking through and there are three bad guys, a dead guy, and a well three bad cops, a dead guy, and a drug dealer and they’re having a conversation. Two of the bad guys are facing where she is. I don’t know how they did not see her so they the one of the bad cops shoots the drug dealer and she’s all like “Huuuuuh!” and her body cam catches it.
And that’s what the whole movie becomes about is the body cam and she she’s just like “Huuuuuh!”
And she just keeps walking out into the complete open and I’m like “Girl, just stop listen Lee you have to do! Just stop!” And then she just kept going! I mean they, yeah that’s crazy thing to see but if you think you’re seeing something you’re not supposed to see, don’t lose your ambush priority!
So in the Army they teach you that you want to fight three-to-one if you really want-if you can-if you have to get into a fight try to have three soldiers for every one bad guy or hey, if you got the ambush you can ambush them. I mean I guess she really couldn’t ambush him because she’s a cop, but there were three guys there and she just saw one of them just outright murder a man.
Execute. That’s what I liked in this movie. She’s like that wasn’t a killing, that was an execution and she’s just like she just…I don’t know if her mind went blank and I’m like I feel like she her mind would not have went blank right there.
So later on in the movie she’s all like surprised you know like “Oh my god! There’s bad cops!” and so her partner was originally picked to do that ride-along with the cop that she was with – Officer Brown – and she-he had something to do with his girlfriend or something that night so she’s like “I’ll do it” which in the military that’s the big thing. If you’re single, you end up getting stuck doing so many details that the married folks don’t have to do because they got families, which I found extremely unfair.
At the time, I was like “Oh yeah, that’s cool go, spend time with your family,” but I’m like, “Hey, I got things I want to do to like go see movies about cops!”
She finally puts it together. Oh because her partner was originally requested by Officer Brown to go with the bad cop up with officer Brown on this ride-along and she just doesn’t realize, oh there maybe there was a reason he his name came up and then he was pretty dirty in a way in the I’m gonna look the other way kind of dirty so it’s not like super dirty because he’s trying to protect himself and he’s got his family to worry about and stuff.
And it’s hard to do when you gosh gosh it’s I could not be a cop. We’ll just leave it at that.
One final thing I’d like to point out is is that she is all about being the change she doesn’t want anybody else to make the change. She doesn’t put her faith into things to make the change. She says you have to be the change. You have to do it yourself.
Finally, a great message from a movie!
So thanks for watching Movies Are Dumb Sometimes, where we today talked about Black and Blue.
I thought it was a fairly decent film, but when I was going into it I was ready to tear it apart. I thought it was gonna be trash for some reason. I saw the trailer once and I really actually I really enjoyed it it spoke to me, which a lot of movies don’t do, but it was it was a pretty good story.
And yeah, what’d you think? Leave some comments below! Tweet! Get on Facebook at Movies Are Dumb Sometimes.
Yes I know I can’t believe they let me do that go ahead and like and share and let me know what movies you would like for me to find dumb things in next.
If you did see this movie, please let me know if you were sad when Darius died. Cuz I shouldn’t have been sad. He was a bad guy. But for some reason I was sad. I think it was because the evil cop killed him but let me know!
